PPTP VPN Configuration in Windows 8

Creating a point-to-point tunneling protocol (PPTP) VPN in Windows 8 is not quite as straightforward as in earlier versions of Windows.  Although the process is almost identical to that of Windows 7, an extra step is required in order for the PPTP VPN connector to work, and if this isn’t done, you’ll see the following error message:

Error connecting to Domain.com PPTP VPN Connector

Error 850: The Extensible Authentication Protocol type required for authentication of the remote access connection is not installed on your computer.


  1. Click Close to the above error message
  2. Right-click the VPN connector > View Connection Properties
  3. On the Security tab, in the Authentication section, click to select Allow these protocols (as per below screenshot) > OK.
